China Stocks Rock the House

By Ian L. Cooper and Erin Beale

Congratulations to those of you who followed Chris DeHaemer's August 23, 2004, web-only pick of Chinese Internet stocks SINA (which just posted blowout earnings), CHINA , NTES , and SOHU .

Here's where we currently stand.

CHINA

$4.75

NTES

23-Aug-04

$37.75

SOHU

You can find our more about them here: http://www.taipanonline.com/htmlcode/members/alerts/20040823.html

According to DeHaemer, “ China tech stocks launched this week, riding on the coattails of Sina Corp (SINA:NASDAQ) , whose Q3 revenues were up 65% with earnings up 24%. The company attributed the growth to strong advertising.

“Our other Chinese Internet picks are no slouches, either, as you can see above.

“Sina was able to produce strong growth in advertising despite a yearlong crackdown by the Chinese government on porn and other websites incompatible with good, clean Commie fun. China Mobile, the state-owned telecom whose networks carry Sina products, suspended approval of Sina's applications for products using its interactive voice service for three months and of applications using more advanced systems for six months. That means things will only get better once these suspensions end. Values are still one tenth those of US Internets. Hold these stocks!”

And while companies like Sohu only see earnings between 17 and 19 cents per share, below rough estimates of 22 cents per share, we are not changing our bullish position on China Internet stocks, as we believe they're still undervalued.

Before bidding you a good day, here's Erin Beale with more…

Sunny Days Ahead for Sunrise

Sunrise Senior Living (SRZ:NYSE) has lagged in our portfolio for the past few months. But the stock has been running strong lately and I anticipate a breakout ahead of Q3 earnings, scheduled for release on November 4.

Remember that Sunrise is completing the process of selling all underlying real estate and instead signing long-term contracts to manage the senior care facilities. This is intended to reduce debt levels and stabilize earnings. I anticipate Q3 numbers will show a positive transition. And the way this stock has been running, it appears that investors agree.

With a PEG of 0.43 and a P/E of 14, I still like Sunrise fundamentally. Sunrise blows its closest competitor, Beverly Enterprises, out of the water in revenue growth and valuation levels. I maintain my belief that Sunrise is a solid play with lots of growth potential ahead, and I recommend you continue to hold your shares.
