Sell SFE, VERT and ICGE in late January Rally

By Ian L. Cooper

Sell Safeguard Scientific (SFE:NYSE), VerticalNet (VERT:NASDAQ) and Internet Capital Group (ICGE:NASDAQ) into the late January rally fueled by another Fed rate cut.

Continue to hold on to ViroLogic (VLGC:NASDAQ). It’s showing an upward trend. Wall Street end of the year shenanigans have put a crimp in our two-month model. We will give it an extra two weeks to see if it finds some support.

In addition, plan to sell Sun Microsystems (SUNW:NASDAQ) if it reaches our stop-loss of US$24.50. Over the past two years, it’s grown 333 percent and looks as if it’s putting in a double bottom of US$25. However, if it breaks through its current support level, it’s a sell. Otherwise, we’ll ride it out for another two years or as long as people continue to buy big servers.

In other news, Media 100 Inc. (MDEA:NASDAQ) jumped 9 percent on news that it’s announcing its new streaming media services initiatives today during a live Internet press conference. This should include the announcement of its newest Streamriver Service Center in Burbank, California, a facility designed to satisfy a strong demand for streaming media services in the new "Digital Hollywood" market.
