Cut
your losses
By Christian DeHaemer
and let your winners run. Its time to cut
your losses on "Dog of the Dow" SBC Communications
(SBC:NYSE). The company just posted a Q1 net loss
and warned that its full-year revenue growth targets
would be challenging. It also pink-slipped 4,000 employees
and cut expenses by 4.3% in Q1 2002 as revenue and demand
took one for the team.
Q1 net loss came in at US$81 million or two cents a
share, compared to a profit of US$8.5 billion or 54
cents a share a year earlier. Revenue fell 6% to US$10.5
billion. Including the Cingular Wireless venture, Q1
revenue fell close to 4% to US$12.6 billion, below expectations
of US$13.15 billion. Even though SBC reiterated its
5% to 7% growth expectations for 2002, it said that
it could face challenges to meeting its revenue goals
of a 1% to 3% rise.
But fear not! Weve got plenty of winners on our
chart. Check it out.
