An Airline Turns a Profit!

By Ian L. Cooper

Instead of touting Martin Denholm's recent Taipan successes, we'll let him do the honors. We're sure you won't mind the good news he has to share. Here he is now with more on his JetBlue and Suncor recommendations:

“An airline turns a profit. No, that isn't a typo. I know it seems strange to read such a headline these days, but the news actually belongs to JetBlue (JBLU:NASDAQ) - a long-time member of my Taipan portfolio.

“Net income finished at US$2.4 million (2 cents per share), down sharply from US$19.5 million (17 cents per share) a year earlier - but still a profit! Analysts had expected JetBlue to suffer its first quarterly dip into the red, projecting a loss of 4 cents per share.

“While rising fuel costs continue to cripple all the airlines' profit margins, JetBlue was able to save just over US$13 million by hedging a substantial portion of its fuel expenses. It also posted a 27% leap in operating revenue to US$334 million.

“One of JetBlue's most lucrative routes is the East Coast corridor that extends from its New York hub to several major cities in Florida. But bookings suffered because of the four hurricanes that struck that state in September, with the fallout extending into October. That's in addition to the current fierce competition within the airline sector.

“But, against that backdrop, JetBlue is one of just three airlines to turn a quarterly profit, the others being Southwest and AirTran. For the last two years, the stock has broken higher around March (spring break time), so I'm holding till then. Depending on what happens in the oil market, we may look to cash out later this year.

*** “Suncor's Sunny Quarter: There was good news for my September 2004 pick, Suncor Energy (SU:NYSE) . The Calgary-based oil sand mining company, the world's second largest, said fourth-quarter profits rose 10% to C$333 million (US$269 million) or 73 cents per share.

“This came despite a 5.4% drop in oil production to 222,500 barrels per day (bpd), as repair work in November caused some of its oil sand operations to be shut down. A January fire in one of its two oil sand upgrading units means production will be approximately half normal levels (110,000 bpd) until the third quarter. But the company's property loss and business interruption insurance policy covers it for US$1.1 billion.

“And with repairs already in progress, Suncor has wisely brought forward other maintenance work scheduled for later this year. After that, the company expects production to increase to 260,000 bpd by the end of 2005.

“With gains of 16.5% since September, keep holding for now.”
