DG
Reports 8/29
By Ian L.
Cooper
One month
after recommending Dollar General (DG:NYSE),
we continue to stay true to our bullish stance. A day
after the retail sector had its head handed to it on
a silver platter, our DG and NDN plays look like
the stocks to own. For the near term, the good news
is that, for all their lack of confidence in the market,
consumers continue to shop at discount stores.
Fact is,
who wants to spend US$10 on a product you can get for
a US$1? Mounting job cuts, an economy going down the
tubes faster than Phil Donahues ratings, and the
possibility of war with Iraq are practically forcing
consumers to want to spend less.
Stores like
DG and NDN, with their value pricing and offerings of
general merchandise and food, continue to strip market
share from the department stores, specialty stores,
and any other retailer you can think of. The closing
of Ames should bring in more business, too. And, although
consumer spending has slowed to a crawl, earnings are
expected to remain on track for the remainder of 2002.
That said:
continue holding DG and NDN. DG reports earnings tomorrow
morning. Well keep you posted.
