Lifesaving Shirts?
Lifeshirt.com, based in California, has developed a prototype of its lifeshirt. The shirt consists of an array of physiologic sensors and electrocardiographic electrodes which are sewn into the shirt. The lifeshirt constantly records vital data such as heart rate and breathing patterns. The data is then passed onto a pocket-sized computer worn on the body.
Data collected by the lifeshirt is then transmitted by the user using their home computers to Lifeshirt.com via the Internet. Staff physicians and technicians are available 24 hours a day to analyze data. With the proper clearance, users and their doctors can have instant access to the lifeshirt data.
The shirt, which contains six sensors, weighs about the same as a normal shirt. The lifeshirt can be worn while you are at work, playing or sleeping. This give doctors a bigger picture of your health rather than the brief recordings they get during doctor visits.
The lifeshirt is scheduled to go on sale in September 2000. It will cost about US$250 for the shirt and pocket-sized computer. Monitoring cost will be US$30 per day.

Anonymity on the Internet
Is this even possible? According to Zero-Knowledge Systems Inc., a company based in Montreal, it is. They recently released their software entitled Freedom1.0. With the Freedom software you can create up to 5 online pseudonyms which can not be linked back to your real identity.
The software lets you encrypt and privatize your web browsing, email, chat, telnet, and newsgroups. This will help stop unsolicited junk email, prevent your personal information from accidentally being released, and allow you to stop worrying about Internet privacy.
The service is intended to give Internet users greater privacy when they communicate ideas or shop online. However, some fear that such services can interfere with law enforcement officials who are trying to track down shady Web users.
Freedom1.0 is currently available for download at http://www.freedom.net. For US$49.95 you can create 5 pseudonyms which you get to use for 1 year or you can sign up for a free trial. The software is currently only available with Win95 and Win98 and is not compatible with AOL.
